A custom driveway gate is one of those finishing items that quietly blows a budget. A bespoke steel or aluminium entry gate with automation, bought and installed through an Australian fabricator, commonly runs $6,000 to $20,000 depending on size, design, and motor. The same gate, sourced direct from a Chinese factory, often lands in Australia for $2,500 to $7,000 including the automation kit.

The saving is real because you are removing the local fabricator's margin and labour, which is where most of the cost sits. What you take on instead is the sourcing, the freight, and a few compliance checks. Steel or aluminium: which gate material

The material choice drives cost, weight, maintenance, and the size of motor you need. Both are made well in China. The right pick depends on the span, the look, and the environment.

Steel is stronger for a given section, which matters for wide or heavy feature gates and for security. It is heavier, so it needs a more robust motor and stronger posts, and it will rust if the coating is compromised. For steel to last in Australian conditions, hot-dip galvanising before powder coating is the specification that holds up, particularly within a few kilometres of the coast.

Aluminium is lighter, will not rust, and is the default for most modern residential entry gates. It runs a smaller, cheaper motor and puts less load on posts and hinges. Automation: motors, sensors, and access control

Automation is where a gate becomes a system, and where cheap imports go wrong if you do not specify properly. A good factory can supply the gate leaf, the motor, the controller, the safety sensors, and the intercom as one pre-matched package, so your electrician only connects mains power.

Two mechanisms cover most jobs:

  • Sliding gate motors run a rack along the bottom rail. They suit wide driveways and sloping or windy sites, and need side room for the gate to slide open.
  • Swing gate motors (ram or articulated arm) suit level driveways with room for the leaves to swing. Underground motors give the cleanest look at higher cost.

Match the motor's duty rating and pull to the gate weight and span, and add margin. An undersized motor on a heavy steel gate is a warranty claim waiting to happen. Specify safety photocells (so the gate reverses on an obstruction), a manual release for power failures, and the access method you want: keypad, remote, intercom, or app.

Two compliance points that are easy to miss. First, the automation motor and controller are mains electrical equipment, so they must carry electrical approval and the RCM (the SAA/RCM electrical approval regime), backed by a registered responsible supplier. Second, an automated gate is a powered moving object, and there are safety requirements covering entrapment and crushing points. Sizing, corrosion, and finish

Gates are made to your opening, so the dimensions in your purchase order are the gates you get. Give the factory the clear opening width, the ground slope, the post-to-post dimension, and the swing or slide direction. For sliding gates, remember the gate needs to be longer than the opening and needs run-back space beside it.

On finish and corrosion, the order of operations matters more than the colour:

  • Steel: hot-dip galvanise, then a zinc-rich primer or powder-coat system over the top. Galvanising after fabrication protects the welds and cut edges, which are the first points to rust.
  • Aluminium: a quality powder coat over a properly pre-treated surface. Ask for the coating standard and, near the coast, a marine or severe-environment grade.

Get the RAL or powder colour code into the contract, and ask for a coated sample coupon before production if the colour is critical. Coatings applied at the factory cannot be adjusted once the gate is on the water.

Freight and crating for a bulky item

Gates are awkward freight: long, flat, heavy, and easy to bend or scratch if packed poorly. A single gate is rarely worth its own container, so most orders travel as part of a shared or consolidated load, which is one reason to buy gates alongside other materials for the same build.

Insist on a proper timber crate or steel A-frame, edge and corner protection, and separation between the gate leaf and the motor and hardware so nothing rubs in transit. A bent bottom rail or a gouged coating on arrival is expensive to fix and slow to replace. Pre-shipment inspection with a photo log before the crate is closed is cheap insurance on an item like this.
